Adolf Eberle was the son of the painter Robert Eberle and studied under Karl Theodor of Pilotys.
This painting was found by Hammer Galleries from a group of works assembled from various private and museum collections. These collections included those of William Randolph Hearst, Clarence H. Mackay, the Walker Center, the Duke of Portland, the Duke of Marlborough, Princess Marie Louise, the Duke of Devonshire, the Earl of Kinnoull, Baron Leopold de Rothschild, Lord Robert Cavendish, and many others.
