“I work in a variety of mediums, and enjoy the marriage of subject matter to medium. For instance, in Breakfast in Neverland, I knew I wanted to use children’s cereal as a medium, but waited for over a decade before I found the right subject. When I saw Michael Jackson’s mug shot on television, I knew in an instant it was perfect for the project. The medium was challenging and interesting to work with. I spent over a hundred hours selecting cereals with color varieties I liked, sorting them out into little cups and baggies, and gluing down pieces of cereal. Sickeningly, the studio space I share with other artists smelled like sugar and silicone rubber for weeks.
While I used a variety of colorful cereals, one cereal -“Oreo O’s” – was crucial, for it provided the darkest brown and the lightest white. Unfortunately “Oreo O’s” were discontinued during production of the piece. I searched dozens of stores with no luck finding the cereal. I finally had to call my mother and ask her to ship me two boxes from out of state. Thanks to her, I was able to finish the mosaic and have it photographed a couple of weeks before Michael Jackson’s trial. The Stranger put Breakfast in Neverland on the cover the week of his trial, February 17th 2005.”
