Log Raft in Canal
Virginia Banks (1920 – 1985)
Log Raft in Canal, 1950
Oil on burlap
36”h x 20”w
Signed lower left
With its wonderful imagery and very thickly applied paint on burlap/masonite, Log Raft in Canal was exhibited at the Grand Central Galleries in NYC. Banks exhibited at the Whitney and PAFA, among other major venues. She was a Seattle artist, and this is probably an image of the Montlake Cut toward Lake Union with the University Bridge in background. She spent most of her time exhibiting at major museums and galleries in the major art centers of the Northeast United States. She is still little known, as most of her best paintings were held in her estate until very recently.
