Machete Wedding
Jeffrey Sarmiento (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK)
Machete Wedding, 2005
Enameled and cast glass
10”h x 8”w x 6”d
Machete Wedding, a wedge shaped sculpture, features a vintage photograph (originally shot by the artist’s great uncle) of a young Filipina woman. She is submerged in cast glass, in which float drawings of machetes and their names, propelling out toward the viewer. The piece carries multiple narratives, combining traditional native carved weaponry, ethnographic photography, and a Filipino version of the shotgun wedding.
Side view:

This work is part of the source imagery in Emily Benz’s essay/short story, The Invasion.
