“The Champion” is inscribed on the back of this painting. As to what that means, we are not sure. Perhaps he was a chess champion, or a former champion in another field. Or just a grandpa that was highly thought of.
Lewis sculpted the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial sculpture on the Washington State Capital grounds in Olympia. This was a major piece of which $50,000 was raised by the 1919 Legislature and a total of $65,000 was needed to complete the large scale sculpture project still proudly standing on the front lawn of the state capital, welcoming all visitors who come here.
